Welcome to the West Lothian Driving Instructors Association Website

Here's hoping you all had a very Merry Christmas time, and wishing everyone all the very best for 2009

Welcome to the West Lothian Driving Instructors Association website. This site is designed to function like an online newsletter for all driving instructors (ADIs and PDIs) who operate out of the Bathgate Driving Test Centre and are members of our association. The function of the site and the association is to keep our members informed of:-

  • Things happening in our working area that can affect us

  • Things happening in the driving instruction industry as a whole

  • Things happening in the motoring field in general

  • Our meeting schedule

  • Our social event schedule

If you are not a member and are unsure if it is worth your while, have a look at this link, and have a look around the site to see what we are up to and about.

Christmas Party

Took place on Saturday 12th December. I understand that it was a reasonable night, though possibly not as good as last years venue.  Still, we live and learn!. If anyone has photos I would be gratefull if you would send them to me to put up on a gallery.

First Social Event of 2009

Our new Social Coordinator (see AGM, below) Tom Meechan is arranging a Burns Ceilidh on February 6th. The plan is to have a Ceilidh (same band as last year) with a Haggis, Neeps and Tatties supper. By all accounts last year's Ceilidh was VERY good so it is likely to be a popular event, partners and freinds are very welcome. The planned venue is Craigsfarm and we plan to put the tickets on at £10 per head, including supper. Contact Tom Meechan for details to get in quick or look out for notices in the DTC or "Bill's Shop".

AGM in December

The association AGM was on Monday December 1st at Craigsfarm in Livingston.  The committee was re-elected as a group, with Tom Meechan joining to take on the role of Social Co-ordinator.  Please note that this does not mean that only Tom can arrange social events, but he will be available to help ensure that several people are not running the same thing and that events are publicised in the group.

Fraud and Integrity Unit meeting

The article on this meeting was published in the ADI News, a copy of the article is on the board in the DTC. I hope to pass this article on to some of the other trade press to see if they will run with it as well.

CPD Event at Currie DTC.

There was recently a DSA roadshow on CPD with was rather badly publisised (Perhaps they should have contacted our Tom!!) about CPD. I was unable to attend this event, but one of our members, Katherine Kerr did go and I banjoed her into writing us a peice on it. This is what Katherine had to say...

I had a test today (tuesday 16th December) at Currie test centre and when I walked in there were CPD sessions running in the waiting room of the test centre.  There was 3 people from the DSA who were advising you of how to record your development, I have a attached a copy of the forms that they gave to help record your CPD, they also gave details of courses that they are running in Glasgow next year. I asked about the WLDIA meetings, WestDrive and also the road safety day at west Lothian college. They said that as long as you are learning something new at the meetings you can keep this on your CPD record, no certificates are needed, even if you are informed about a new road sign or how to approach and deal with a certain junction. If they were to check your CPD they would call the person who held the meeting/course and ask about agenda/minutes. There is nothing to stop an ADI filling out a record of CPD even if they have not attended/completed courses, the only person they will be fooling is them self's. They told me that I could record the road safety session at West Lothian College as I met families of people who were involved with road accidents, I learned the rippling affects of what a road accident can cause to everyone involved including the police and ambulance crew. Reading the new high way code book, keeping up to date with the DSA website, attending a computing or accounting course can all contribute to your CPD. The attachments can be found on the DSA website but you can create your own way of recording your CPD.

Katherine gave me copies of forms that the DSA gave out, I will try to get direct links to the agencies versions on line and post them on this site. I will try to do this in the new year.

All in all, it would appear that the response from ADIs to CPD is generally VERY positive and throughout the industry the majority of instructors appear at this stage to be very pro-CPD in its voluntary format. Whether this will start to change once CPD is changed to be compulsory remains to be seen, especially if there is a shift towards us being channelled along the lines of specific courses.

If you are an ADI or are training to become a driving instructor and either live or work in the West Lothian area, please click this link to find out about joining the association.  It may well be worth your while just to keep informed about what is happening in the area.

If you are looking for a driving instructor in the area please see the Directory page for a listing of all our members.  All offer high quality driving tuition.,
